Discover Mallorca - North Coast
The Jewel of the Mediterranean
The Property Market South including Palma & Outskirts South West West Coast
In terms of scenery, popularity and investment, the North Coast ranks very high on the interest level of international buyers, with those from Great Britain and Ireland being the most dominant. The region benefits from beautiful coastal towns such as Puerto Pollensa, Formentor, Alcudia and old historic towns and villages such as Pollensa Town itself. Popularity is reflected in the property prices. In terms of lifestyle it delivers on almost every front with beaches, sailing, restaurants and the arts all contributing to the areas appeal.
Pollensa is steeped in history, having been occupied by the Romans and Moors. After it was conquered by King Jaime I, the area became consolidated and by 1236 it had a parish church and in 1248 a Papal bull by Innocent IV named it as one of the most important towns outside Palma. Today it is a thriving popular town much loved by its local and cosmopolitan residents.
There is an abundance of things to enjoy, including the Calvari steps leading up to the Oratory, part of which date back to the end of the 18th century and at Easter they are the backdrop for one of the most dramatic processions on the Island.
The recent extension of the motorway from Palma to this end of the island means that, on a good day, you can comfortably drive to Palma in less than 40 minutes. Heavy investment in the infrastructure over the past few years has been necessary to meet the ever increasing demand of the summer tourist industry and in general, prices have continued to increase, seeing rises of up to 8% year on year.
If you are looking for something really exclusive, Formentor is ´the place´. This is due in part to the twisting road from Puerto de Pollensa with hair pin bends. Passengers can take in the spectacular scenery and the panorama from the viewpoint of Es Colomers is worth stopping for. The area can however be reached by making the journey from Puerto de Pollensa by boat. Exclusive sea-front villas with private beaches are dotted along the coastline at correspondingly high prices. The Hotel Formentor is famous, in part, because of its celebrity guest list which in the past included Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco.
Alcudia, across the bay from Puerto de Pollensa, is also steeped in history and was inhabited as far back as 2000-1200BC. The Romans, having conquered the island in 123BC, founded the cities of Palma and Pollensa, the original ruins are still visible today and continue to be top tourist attractions. The old part of Alcudia was built within the city walls which were completed in 1362 and retains a medieval ambience with its charming narrow streets. Another attraction is the Albufera National Park, a sanctuary for migrating birds which attracts birdwatchers from all over Europe.
The area is very popular with hill walkers and hikers during winter time and guided excursions are organised regularly ranging from low to high, with the groups being small, between 5 and 25 people and trips lasting for up to four hours.
