Discover Mallorca - West Coast

The major towns and villages in this area are Sóller, Valldemossa, Deia, Fornalutx, Banyalbufar and Estellencs and Port de Sóller.

This part of Mallorca is very popular with buyers from the British Isles with a huge demand for villas and typical Mallorcan fincas. The town of Sóller has a population of around 16,000 people and is the cultural centre for this area. It is adjacent to Port de Sóller which has recently benefited from major reconstruction, these factors, combined with a twenty five minute drive time to Palma, has led to increased interest which is reflected in property prices. Port de Sóller´s large marina has recently been upgraded by the local authority and the area is generally regarded as a very secure and profitable investment opportunity.

Valldemossa, Fornalutx, Estellencs and Banyalbufar are benefiting from an increase in buyers who seek the quiet and tranquil surroundings of the beautiful countryside, whilst still having access to the fantastic beaches nearby. Although some beaches are a little difficult to reach, it only seems to add to the charm and exclusive feel, once there.

As can be seen from our ´Price Guide´, the property here ranks among the most expensive on the island. A combination of strict building controls and the absence of large developments, contribute to making it very select with a price tag to match.

Deia, for instance, has always been very popular with artists, composers and painters, including the renowned poets Robert Graves and Laura Riding. The town of Valldemossa is known throughout the world due to its connections with Frederik Chopin and George Sand as well as many other artists and musicians. It is without doubt, one of the most picturesque villages on the island with its narrow streets and beautiful gardens. A major attraction is the Cartoixa which dates from the 14th century and where Chopin composed many of his works. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are frequent summer visitors to their home S´Estaca, an historical mansion which once belonged to the Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria. The Douglas´s are major contributors to the cultural life of Mallorca and have set up the Costa Nord cultural centre.

The village is also famous as the birthplace of the island´s only saint, Santa Catalina Tomas, who was born there in 1533. Almost every house in Valldemossa has a small ceramic plaque with a prayer to the saint by the door.

Building plots are in short supply and difficulty with building regulations means that land, when it does become available, is very highly priced.
